How Important is Image Moderation?

UGC stands for user generated content. It literally refers to any and all the content generated by users on a website. image moderation refers to the strategic removal of visual content. Often, large portions of websites are deemed to be user generated content as they involve comments and reviews by users. As the internet grows, so does the information on it. Due to the human need to be heard, we tend to try to communicate and use the internet as a tool for this. This results in the generation of even more UGC.

In today’s information age, the amount of people using the internet to find information on various topics is truly staggering. The queries can be as unimportant as ‘How do I kill time?’ to as life altering as ‘What is the ideal dosage of a drug?’. It is here that the importance of UGC moderation becomes obvious. If such people stumble across irresponsibly written, non-moderated user generated content on a forum, the consequences could be disastrous. Say the first individual comes across a forum advertising bike stunts and daredevilry without stressing the need for training and safety in these pursuits. If he is motivated to try these stunts, he will most likely end up in the hospital, if not in the morgue. At the same time if the second individual comes across a page giving incorrect dosage, he or she might accidentally poison themselves.

While cynics will always argue that image moderation is a gross violation of their right to freedom of speech, most proponents of UGC moderation try to, and justifiably so, drive home their point citing examples such as the one above. Even though this is just a hypothetical situation, it is quite probable to occur in the real world. Regardless of how online content generators feel, most responsible individuals would recognize the risk associated with unchecked UGC. Truly seasoned internet users support UGC moderation. This can be seen in action on many forums that employ senior members as moderators, screening out incorrect and biased information.
