Low Altitude Mapping Photography
This method of aerial mapping does not necessarily depend on laser technology. Instead, it uses digital cameras to capture images of structures at low altitude. Mostly used in real estates to show and access property. One is required to capture images at 300 feet above the ground level to be able to obtain best photos. It is used for different purposes such as parks planning, natural conservation activities, real estate building, power line patrolling and road planning among others.
Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR)
It is basically the use of laser beam to show images on a given topography. Technology measures the characteristics of scattered light to determine different topographical feature on a given geographical area. Because it works in illuminating images on a given topography, it is not the best method to use when gathering information. Instead, it is used in measuring subject matter such as distant features in a given topography, buildings and large objects. LIDAR thus is commonly used in different disciplines such as physics, biology, meteorology, geology, military and conservation.
Most engineers, geographers, surveyors, geologists and city planner prefer using aerial mapping technology because of its accuracy. In most cases the traditional methods were not accurate and did not give highly precise visual maps of an area. In addition, online mapping such as Google Maps is based on aerial mapping technology.
